Ways to make the journey

Shared jeep
1.5 h

Jeeps leave from the Kurseong town stand, near the station, when full. The road climbs past Dow Hill's turn, through Tung and Sonada, to Ghum at 2,258 m before dropping into Darjeeling. Fog is common above Sonada on winter mornings, so expect slower driving. Morning departures are the most frequent.

Reserved car
1–1.5 h

A reserved car lets you stop at Sonada, Ghum Monastery and Batasia Loop on the way, which turns a transfer into half a day of sightseeing. Agree the stops before you leave. Add about ₹500–800 for a two-to-three-hour stop programme, indicative 2026.

Toy train
2.5–3 h

The NJP–Darjeeling train runs this upper section daily, and the DHR has run separate Kurseong–Darjeeling services at times. It shares the road through Kurseong, Tung and Sonada, then crosses Ghum and loops round Batasia. Timings change often; check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is Darjeeling from Kurseong

About 30 km by Hill Cart Road, 1–1.5 hours by car or shared jeep, longer in fog. Shared seats cost ₹100–180 and a reserved car ₹1,800–2,500, indicative 2026. The road passes Tung, Sonada and Ghum, the highest point, before dropping into Darjeeling.

Is the toy train from Kurseong to Darjeeling worth it

Yes, if you want the experience without the full 7.5-hour run from NJP. The upper section takes around 2.5–3 hours and covers Ghum, India's highest station, and Batasia Loop. Services and timings change, so book on IRCTC and check current status before you travel.

What can I see between Kurseong and Darjeeling

Stop at Sonada for views and its small monasteries, at Ghum for Yiga Choeling monastery and the DHR museum at the station, and at Batasia Loop for the Gorkha War Memorial and Kangchenjunga views. With a reserved car these stops add two to three hours.

Is the road from Kurseong to Darjeeling foggy

Often, especially above Sonada and around Ghum, from June to September and on many winter mornings. Drivers slow right down and use headlights. Plan this transfer for late morning when fog tends to lift, and avoid driving after dark if you can.
