Ways to make the journey

Shared jeep + pick-up
1.5 h

Take a shared jeep from Kalimpong's motor stand to Pedong, about an hour. There is no regular shared transport up to Sillery Gaon, so ask your homestay to send a car to meet you in Pedong bazaar. This is the cheapest way for one or two travellers. Agree the pick-up fare and time with your homestay the day before, and share your jeep's departure time.

Reserved car
1–1.5 h

A reserved car from Kalimpong goes door to door and can stop at Algarah, Damsang Fort and Pedong on the way. The final village road is narrow and steep in places; drivers prefer SUVs after rain. Tell the driver the name of your homestay, as there are several along the ridge.

Worth a stop

  1. Algarah bazaar
  2. Damsang Fort
  3. Pedong monastery and Cross Hill
  4. Icchey Gaon
If you are two or more, a reserved car with a stop at Damsang and Pedong costs only a little more than jeep seats plus the pick-up, and saves a separate sightseeing trip.
