Ways to make the journey
2.5–3 h
Jeeps for Kalimpong leave from the Chowk Bazaar motor stand through the morning. The road heads to Jorebungalow, turns down past Lamahatta and the Peshok tea gardens to Teesta Bazaar, crosses the river and climbs to Kalimpong. The descent is long, so anyone prone to motion sickness should take a window seat.
2.5 h
A reserved car lets you stop at Lamahatta's eco-park and at the viewpoints above the meeting of the Teesta and Rangeet rivers. Add a little for these stops. If the Teesta road (NH10) is closed by slips, drivers may route via other roads; check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is Kalimpong from Darjeeling
About 50 km, usually 2.5–3 hours by car or shared jeep. The road drops to the Teesta river at Teesta Bazaar and climbs again to Kalimpong. Shared seats cost ₹200–300 and a reserved car ₹3,000–4,000, indicative 2026.
Should I stay in Kalimpong or do a day trip from Darjeeling
Stay at least one night. The round trip is 5–6 hours of driving, which leaves little time for Kalimpong's monasteries, nurseries and markets. A night there also breaks the journey from Darjeeling to Gangtok, which runs along the same Teesta valley.
What can I see between Darjeeling and Kalimpong
Lamahatta's eco-park of prayer flags and cypress, the Peshok tea gardens, viewpoints above the meeting of the Teesta and Rangeet rivers, and Teesta Bazaar on the river. Allow an extra hour or two with a reserved car for these stops.
Is the Darjeeling to Kalimpong road open in monsoon
It usually stays open, but slips on the Teesta valley stretch can close it for hours or days in July and August, and NH10 along the Teesta has had long closures since 2023. Drivers know the detours. Check current status before you travel and keep your plans flexible.
