Saga Dawa

May–Jun, full moon of the fourth Tibetan month

Saga Dawa marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing, and the whole fourth Tibetan month is considered holy. In Lachen, prayers are held at Ngodrub Choling monastery, and many Buddhists avoid killing animals and give alms through the month.

Saga Dawa is the holiest month of the Tibetan Buddhist year, and its full-moon day, Saga Dawa Duchen, commemorates three events in the Buddha's life: his birth, enlightenment and death or parinirvana. In Sikkim it is a state holiday. In Gangtok, monks carry holy texts from the Tsuklakhang around the town in a large procession that many visitors see.

In Lachen the celebrations are quieter and closer to daily religious life. Families visit the Lachen Monastery, Ngodrub Choling, to light butter lamps and offer prayers, and many people take vows during the month, such as not eating meat or not killing animals. Merit is believed to be multiplied in this month, so alms-giving and circumambulation increase.

Saga Dawa falls in May or June, which is also peak flower season and the start of the monsoon. Lachen was closed to tourists for most of 2023–2026, and pre-monsoon landslides cut North Sikkim roads in late May and June 2025. If you plan around Saga Dawa, check current status before you travel and consider seeing the Gangtok procession as well.

How to do it well

  1. Visit Lachen Monastery in the morning and keep your voice low during prayers.
  2. Respect vows: some families avoid meat this month, so do not push them to share yours.
  3. Build buffer days, since late May and June bring landslide closures.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is Saga Dawa celebrated

Saga Dawa is the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, and its main day is the full moon, usually in late May or June. The exact date changes every year. Sikkim declares a state holiday for it. Check the year's calendar with your operator or Sikkim Tourism.

What happens on Saga Dawa in Sikkim

Buddhists visit monasteries, light butter lamps, make offerings, give alms and often take vows such as avoiding meat. In Gangtok, monks carry sacred texts in a procession from the Tsuklakhang. In villages like Lachen, observances centre on the local monastery and are quieter.

Is Saga Dawa a good time to visit North Sikkim

It can be, if the roads are open. The timing coincides with rhododendron season and the warmest weeks at Gurudongmar, but also with pre-monsoon landslides. Keep the itinerary flexible, add buffer days and check current status before you travel.

Can tourists join Saga Dawa prayers

Visitors may watch and, respectfully, join circumambulation or light a butter lamp at the monastery. Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering prayer halls, walk clockwise and ask before taking photographs. It is a religious observance, so treat it as you would a service in any place of worship.
