Saga Dawa and Buddha Jayanti

May–Jun, full moon of the fourth Tibetan month

Saga Dawa marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. In Darjeeling, monasteries hold prayers through the month, and on the full-moon day monks and families walk in procession through town carrying scriptures and statues, with music from long horns and cymbals.

Saga Dawa is the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, held as the holiest month of the Buddhist year. Its full-moon day, Saga Dawa Duchen, marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing into nirvana, and it overlaps with the Buddha Purnima holiday observed across India. The date falls in May or June.

In Darjeeling, the day is marked by a procession that winds through the town from the monasteries, with monks in maroon robes, long dungchen horns, cymbals and drums, and lay people carrying sacred texts and images. Families light butter lamps, give to charity and avoid eating meat, because good deeds done this month are believed to be multiplied many times.

For visitors it is one of the most open and moving days in the hills. May is also peak tourist season, so the town is full and hotel rates are high. Find a place along the route early, step aside for the procession, and do not cut through the line of monks for a photograph.

How to do it well

  1. Ask your hotel or the nearest monastery the night before for the procession route and start time.
  2. Book rooms early: Saga Dawa falls in peak season, when rates are at their highest.
  3. Carry a light rain jacket, as pre-monsoon showers are common by late May.

Is May a good month to visit Darjeeling

May is peak season: warm days of 12–19 °C, rhododendrons on the high ridges and busy hotels. Mountain views are less reliable than in October and November because of haze and pre-monsoon cloud. If you come for Saga Dawa, book stays and cars at least four to six weeks ahead.
