Okhrey village monastery at dusk

Okhrey's monastery is a small village gompa, the spiritual centre for the Sherpa families who live around it. It is not a grand or famous site, and that is its charm. You walk up through the lanes, past houses with prayer flags on tall poles, to a quiet courtyard with prayer wheels and a view over the hills. On most days you will share it with a few villagers and a dog or two.
Visit at dusk, when butter lamps may be lit, or early in the morning before your walk to Barsey. If the door is shut, ask in the village; someone usually has the key or knows when the caretaker lama is in. Remove your shoes before entering, walk clockwise around the prayer wheels and chortens, and do not point your feet at the altar. Small children should be kept close and quiet.
Ask before taking photos inside, and keep your voice low. A small offering for butter lamps, ₹20–100, is welcome but never required. If there is a puja or festival while you are there, stand at the back and watch quietly. Your hosts can tell you which days are special in the Tibetan calendar, and whether visitors are welcome to join the prayers. Never touch or move ritual objects on the altar.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is there a monastery in Okhrey
Yes, Okhrey has a small village monastery serving its Sherpa Buddhist community. It sits among prayer flags above the houses, a short uphill walk from most homestays. It is a quiet, local place rather than a big tourist site, best visited in the early morning or at dusk.
Is there an entry fee for Okhrey monastery
No entry fee that we know of. A small offering of ₹20–100 for butter lamps is welcome but not compulsory. If the doors are locked, ask in the village for the caretaker. Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering and ask before taking photos.
What should I wear to visit the monastery
Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, and shoes you can slip off easily at the door. In spring and winter you will want a warm jacket and socks, because monastery floors are cold. Hats come off inside, and sunglasses should be removed too.
