Detour to Phensang Monastery

Phensang Monastery belongs to the Nyingma school, the oldest tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and the dominant one in Sikkim. It was established in 1721, during the time of the lama Jigme Pawo, and stands on a hillside the Mangan district administration describes as between Kabi Lungchok and Phodong, with open views over the valley.
It receives far fewer visitors than Phodong. On a quiet morning you may find monks at prayer or young novices at study, and the courtyard is usually calm. Like other Sikkimese gompas, it holds annual ceremonies and masked dances on dates set by the Tibetan calendar.
Ask your driver to take the turn-off on the way north or back. Remove your shoes before the prayer hall, walk clockwise and ask before photographing inside. A small offering at the altar is welcome. Combined with Kabi and Phodong, it makes a short history-and-monastery circuit.
