Leave Algarah at first light and drive slowly up the forested road toward Lava, stopping at clearings and streams to look for birds. Mixed forest between about 1,800 m and 2,200 m holds laughingthrushes, sunbirds, minivets and barbets, and spring adds rhododendron flowers.

The 16 km road from Algarah to Lava climbs from about 1,780 m to 2,200 m through patches of oak, chestnut and other broadleaf forest, cardamom fields and small villages. It is quiet before 8 am, when the first jeeps come through. That makes it a good stretch for a slow birding drive, stopping wherever the forest is thick and getting out to walk short sections on foot.

Common birds at this height include sunbirds, minivets, laughingthrushes, bulbuls, barbets and drongos, and the spring months of March to May bring breeding calls and more activity. In winter, some higher-altitude species move down. A local birding guide, arranged in Lava or through your homestay, will know which bends are productive this season and can identify calls you would miss. Ask for a guide who carries a field guide or app and does not use recorded calls to lure birds.

Carry binoculars, a warm layer and something hot to drink. Keep well off the road when vehicles pass, as the bends are blind. Finish at Lava for breakfast and the monastery, or continue into Neora Valley if you have the forest permit. This works well as a transfer day from Algarah or Kalimpong to Lava. Leave at about 5.30 am in spring and 6 am in winter, and tell your driver the day before that you want to stop often.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What birds can I see between Algarah and Lava

Expect common mid-hill species such as sunbirds, minivets, laughingthrushes, bulbuls, barbets, drongos and tits, with more variety in spring. What you see depends on season, weather and luck. A local guide improves the list a lot. For rarer forest birds, continue into Neora Valley National Park with a permit from Lava.

When is the best time for birding near Lava

March to May is best, when birds are breeding and calling, followed by October to December, when the air is clear and some altitudinal migrants arrive. Go at dawn, before traffic starts. Avoid the monsoon from June to September, when rain, leeches and landslides make roadside birding difficult.

Can I hire a birding guide in Algarah

Guides are easier to find in Lava, where the forest office and lodges have contacts for local naturalists. Ask your homestay in Algarah to arrange one a day ahead. Expect about ₹1,000–1,500 for a morning, indicative for 2026. Agree on start time, route and fee in advance.
