MG Marg and Lal Bazaar evening walk

Start at the top of MG Marg around 5 pm, when the light goes soft and offices empty. The street is about a kilometre of paved promenade with benches, flower beds and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. No cars are allowed, and the no-smoking, no-spitting and no-litter rules are enforced with fines. Families sit in the middle, shopkeepers stand in doorways, and on weekends you will hear more Nepali than Hindi.
From the lower end, walk down the steps to Lal Bazaar, the town's main market. This is where villagers sell what they grow. Look for hard chhurpi cheese strung on cords, round dalle chillies, bundles of fern shoots in season and dried gundruk. The Sunday market is the busiest. Prices are fixed for most produce, so this is not a place to haggle hard. Ask before you photograph stallholders, and keep to one side of the narrow lanes when porters come through with loads.
Climb back to MG Marg for dinner. You can eat well here for ₹150–300: momos, thukpa, thenthuk or a plain thali. If you want Sikkimese home food such as phagshapa or gundruk soup, ask your hotel where it is cooked that week rather than trusting a menu board. The street stays busy until about 9 pm, then empties quickly. Carry a light jacket, even in May, and a small torch for the steps between Lal Bazaar and the main road.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What time do MG Marg shops close
Most shops on MG Marg close between 8 pm and 9 pm, and the street empties soon after. Restaurants may stay open a little later, especially in April, May and October. Some shops close on one weekday, which varies by trader. If you arrive by shared jeep late in the evening, eat near your hotel first and save the walk for the next night.
Is Lal Bazaar open every day
Yes, Lal Bazaar runs daily, but Sunday is the main market day, when more villagers bring produce into town and the stalls spill out. Mornings are best for fresh vegetables and cheese. By evening many vegetable sellers have gone, though shops selling dry goods, clothes and household items stay open. Check current status before you travel during festivals, when timings change.
Can I smoke on MG Marg
No. MG Marg is a no-smoking zone, and spitting and littering are banned too. Police and civic staff do fine offenders, and locals will point it out if you forget. If you smoke, step well away from the promenade and use a bin. The rules are a big part of why the street stays clean, so most visitors find them easy to respect.
