Sunrise over the forests from the Chalsa hilltop

Chalsa sits where the plains first rise towards the hills, and the road from the town climbs a low ridge through tea gardens. Near the top, there are several places to pull over and look south and east: the dark canopy of Gorumara and Chapramari, the paler lines of the Murti and Jaldhaka, tea gardens patching the land, and on clear days mist lying in the river valleys at sunrise.
The best views come after a dry spell between November and February, when the air is clean. By March haze builds and the far views fade, and in the monsoon cloud often sits on the ridge. Bring a flask of tea from your hotel, or stop at a stall in Chalsa on the way up.
Walk or drive up from Chalsa town; it takes 20–40 minutes on foot depending on where you start. Stay on the road and away from the edges of tea gardens. Elephants occasionally cross here too, so do not go before first light. Combine with breakfast at your hotel and a morning tower slot at Chapramari.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What can I see from the Chalsa view point
On clear mornings, the forests of Gorumara and Chapramari, the river channels of the Murti and Jaldhaka, tea gardens across the plains, and the first ridges of the hills to the north. Haze often hides the far view after February, and cloud in the monsoon.
Is Chalsa worth staying in
Yes, if you want a quieter base than Lataguri with a bit of height and tea all around. It is within 20–30 minutes of Gorumara's towers, Murti and Chapramari, and about an hour from Samsing. Choice of lodging is smaller, from homestays to the Sinclairs resort on the hill.
How far is Chalsa from Lataguri
About 20 km, 30 minutes by car on the highway through forest. Chalsa is about 7 km from Murti and roughly 17 km from Samsing via Matelli. Autos and local buses connect the towns in daylight.
