Walk down from Tiger Hill to Jorebungalow
After sunrise, tell your driver you will walk and pay only for the drive up, or arrange to meet at Ghum. The road from Tiger Hill drops through the sanctuary to Jorebungalow, the town just east of Ghum, about 6 km. The traffic thins quickly once the sunrise rush has passed, and the forest is full of birdsong.
The walk is downhill on a paved road, so it is easy on the lungs but harder on the knees. Wear shoes with grip, as the road can be wet and mossy at the edges. You pass the turn to Senchal and small clearings with views back to Kangchenjunga. Watch for the occasional car on the bends.
At Jorebungalow, have tea and a plate of momos in the bazaar, then walk on to Ghum monastery and Batasia Loop, or catch a shared jeep to Darjeeling for ₹30–60, indicative 2026. Fit walkers can also do the route in reverse, starting before dawn with a torch, but most people are happier driving up.
