Mungpoo, Sittong and Kurseong in one day

Leave Darjeeling by 8 am. Drive down through Ghum and on towards Mungpoo, reaching Rabindra Bhavan by mid-morning. Spend an hour at the museum, then drive slowly through the cinchona plantations, stopping for views over the Teesta valley. Tea and snacks in Mungpoo's small bazaar cost little. Ask your driver which road is in the best condition that day; the lower hill roads change with the weather.
From Mungpoo continue to Sittong, a short drive away, for lunch. Some homestays will cook a simple meal for day visitors if you call ahead. From November to January, walk the orange orchards after lunch and buy a basket of mandarins directly from a family. Outside the season, the village and its terraces are still worth a stroll. If you have time, add Latpanchar or Ahaldara, but that makes a long day.
Return via Kurseong, stopping at a tea estate or the Kurseong toy-train station on the way, and reach Darjeeling by evening. A reserved car for the loop costs about ₹3,500–5,000, indicative 2026, depending on stops. It is cheaper to split between four people. If you can, break the loop with a night in Sittong instead; it makes the day far less rushed.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I visit Mungpoo and Sittong in one day
Yes. They are close together, so a full day from Darjeeling or Kurseong can cover Rabindra Bhavan at Mungpoo, the cinchona slopes and Sittong's orchards. A reserved car costs about ₹3,500–5,000, indicative 2026. Leave by 8 am, call a Sittong homestay ahead for lunch, and return via Kurseong by evening.
How far is Mungpoo from Darjeeling
Mungpoo is about 35 km from Darjeeling, typically 1.5–2 hours by road depending on route and conditions. A reserved car for a day trip costs about ₹2,500–3,500, indicative 2026. A few shared jeeps run, but timings are limited. The roads are narrow and winding, so allow extra time after rain.
Is the Mungpoo–Sittong loop good in the monsoon
Not really. From June to September, the narrow roads in these lower hills often suffer landslides and slips, views are hidden in cloud and leeches make walking unpleasant. If you must go, travel by daylight with a local driver, keep the plan flexible and check current status before you travel.
