Makaibari, below Kurseong, is one of the oldest tea estates in Darjeeling, long known for organic and biodynamic farming. Walk the slopes with a local guide, see the factory in season, taste the flushes, and meet the families who pluck the leaf.

Makaibari's gardens drop steeply from the road below Kurseong towards the Balason valley. The estate dates from the 1850s and was held for generations by the Banerjee family, who turned it into one of the best-known organic gardens in India. Its teas have sold at record prices at auction, and many tea lovers come here first.

A guided walk takes you through the rows and into the forest patches the estate keeps between sections. In season you meet pluckers working the slopes, and in the factory you see withering troughs, rolling machines and the dryers. The guide explains why first flush tastes light and green and second flush deeper, and lets you taste both.

For a deeper visit, Makaibari's homestay programme places guests with tea-worker families in the estate villages, with meals at home and a guide for garden walks. It is simple, warm and among the cheapest ways to stay in tea country, at roughly ₹1,200–2,000 a person a night with meals, indicative 2026. Book through the estate's homestay contacts.
