Bhutan's government works from inside a dzong, and you can walk its courtyards once the civil servants go home. We explain when to go, what you can and cannot see, the dress code, and the flag-lowering ceremony.

Tashichho Dzong sits on the west bank of the Wang Chhu at the north end of Thimphu. It became the seat of government in 1952 and holds the throne room, offices of the king and ministries, and the summer quarters of the central monk body under the Je Khenpo. Like every dzong, it is part fortress, part monastery, part office, built around courtyards with a tall central tower. The present building owes much to a large rebuilding in the 1960s under the Third King.

Because it is a working government building, tourists are usually admitted after office hours on weekdays and for longer on weekends and holidays, when the monk body is not in residence or the offices are closed. Your guide will confirm the day's timing. You see the main courtyard, the temple of the monk body when open, and the painted galleries. Ministries and the throne room are closed to visitors.

Dress properly: long sleeves, long trousers or a long skirt, no caps and no shorts. Your guide will wear a kabney, the ceremonial scarf. Photography is allowed in the courtyards but not inside temples. At about 5 pm the national flag is lowered with a small ceremony; stand still and do not photograph the guards up close. Entry is about Nu 500, indicative 2026. From the riverbank opposite you get the classic photo of the whole dzong lit up at night.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What are the visiting hours of Tashichho Dzong

Tourists are usually let in after government office hours on weekdays, from late afternoon until dusk, and for longer on weekends and holidays. Hours change with the season and with the monk body's movements between Thimphu and Punakha. Your guide will know the day's timing. Check current status before you travel.

What should I wear to Tashichho Dzong

Long sleeves and long trousers or an ankle-length skirt, with closed shoes if possible. No shorts, sleeveless tops or caps. Bhutanese wear the gho or kira with a scarf, but visitors are not asked to. Guards will turn away people who are not dressed properly, so carry a light jacket even on a warm day.

Can I see the king at Tashichho Dzong

Almost certainly not. The king's office is inside the dzong complex, but it is closed to visitors and the king does not meet tourists there. You will see the outside of the throne room wing and the guards. The flag-lowering ceremony around 5 pm is the closest most visitors get to state life.
